Frequently Asked Questions

1.Why do you use “Styrofoam”? Our pots are not Styrofoam, they are High-Density Expanded Polystyrene or EPS. Styrofoam is a brand name and is Extruded Polystyrene or XPS. EPS is very durable and lasts much longer than hard plastic. It also insulates the plant roots from heat and cold. In some areas it can even be recycled.

2.Can I re-use growing media? Yes, but you will lose some with the roots when you re-plant so you will need some to top off of your new plants. At the end of the season, you can dump out your leftover in a bucket and leave in the sun for at least 1 week. This will kill any diseases and sterilize the media for the next season. Store out of the weather if possible.

3.What is the green stuff on top of my growing media? This is harmless algae, and occurs in the more humid months or during a lot of rain. You can remove it from your top pot, but it will not harm you or your plants.

4.My pots have are dirty or have algae on them, what do I do? Pots will collect pollen and dust during the season, but can simply be washed with soapy water and a soft sponge. We recommend doing this at the end of every season so your pots are clean and ready to use the next season.

5.Should I take down my towers if I’m not growing in them? yes, if you can store your empty pots away from sun and weather they will retain a nice appearance and last much longer.

6.My water supply has a softener on it, is this ok? No, water softeners add salt to your water, which is not good for your plants. If you have a spigot separate from your house supply, use that for your garden.

7.I get residue in my liquid fertilizer, is this ok? The fertilizers supplied by Verti-Gro are virtually 100% soluble in good water. However, if you have hard water (extra calcium, magnesium, etc.) you may get a precipitate. Just shake up the jug before using. Hard water is actually better for plants than “softened” water.

8.What is the purpose of using a concentrated nutrient solution? Nothing, other than to make it easier for you! The dry nutrients are easier and less expensive to ship and your liquid concentrate only requires 2- 1 gallon jugs and will last you a long time.

9.Why should I use a coconut fiber and rice hull mixture? Coconut fiber is lightweight, yet holds moisture making it perfect for small containers. The rice hulls add some aeration to the mix. The ratio for most plants is 20% rice hulls/80% coconut fiber.

*For tomatoes, cucumbers and ground pots use straight coconut fiber.

10.How often should I water? Watering cycles will depend on the time of year and how big your plants are. In the spring when plants are small you may only need to water once/day for about 3 minutes. In the heat of the summer, it can be 4-5 times/day for 4-5 minutes. As the days get warmer and your plants get bigger start adding more watering cycles. The length of watering cycle will depend on if water is dripping out the bottom pot. You want it to drip out enough to water the ground pot, but not be streaming out for too long that you are wasting water.

FOR VG-1 PATIO GARDENS

Why should I use perlite and vermiculite? Perlite is very porous and vermiculite has moisture retention. This is a good combination for recirculating systems as it drains very well and can even run without a timer. *We are currently testing different coconut fiber options due to the increasing cost of perlite and coconut fiber is a cleaner, renewable resource.

How often should I water? For recirculating gardens you can water a few times a day or even all day and off at night. Watering will depend on time of year, how hot it is outside, and how big your plants are. Plants do not take up water at night, so the system does not need to run after sunset.

How often do I need to change the nutrient solution? Once a month it is good to dump the tank and start fresh, but you can top off your water and nutrients as needed. Dump and clean the tank after each crop.

How do I know I’m adding enough nutrients? If your tank is half full and you fill it up, only add half the amount of nutrients. The best way to know is to use a Conductivity meter. These are inexpensive meters that are great indicators of nutrient levels for any hydroponic system.

Why are my pots flooding? Check the flow of your bubbler. If it is flowing too fast the pots can’t drain quick enough. Adjust the bubbler to slightly less flow.

What is conductivity? Conductivity is the electrical measure of all fertilizers in solution including elements in your water, such as salts. Conductivity is also referred to as PPM (parts per million), TDS (total dissolved solids), micromhos or millimhos (EC). EC x .65= PPM.

What is pH and how do I adjust it? pH is a measure of acidity and basicity. The range for plants is 5.8-7.5 with 7.0 being neutral. A pH of 5.8 to 6.2 is ideal. A simple pH color kit is included with every garden. There are simple pH meters available as well. . For minor adjustments to pH, white vinegar can be added to your tank. Start with 1/2oz per gallon, stir your tank well and check pH again. Continue to add small amounts until you reach the optimal pH and this will be your standard addition to your tank.

Who can test my pH? Your local county extension agent or you can send a 4oz. bottle to Verti-Gro.
